Free Flowers for Decorating

After my friend Lori shared with me how to decorate with the extra herbs I had growing in my garden, I thought I'd try it with my flowers, too.

It was so fun snipping flowers from my own garden to beautify the inside of my home.  :)  Then, I spent some extra time watering in my front yard garden.  Here are a few images of some spiderwebs I discovered after I watered.

Baptizing Them

June 24.  The half of my guys who went camping/canoeing were home, and we all went to church.  Afterward, we drove up to another church which lets us use their facilities for baptism services.  This particular baptism service was special, because Danny was baptized.

Pamela and her daughter Aelsa play for prelude.

Court and his son come to see Jonathan (his nephew) be baptized.

Pastor Fraley

Danny shares his testimony

In case you would like to read it, here is Danny's testimony:

“I don’t want to be a Christian,” 5-year-old-me said one evening in the front room.  My family and I had just come home from the funeral for the pastor of our church.

My mom came over and calmly asked why.

I explained, “Pastor Bob was a Christian and he died, and I don’t want to die!”

My mom proceeded to tell me that our pastor had become a Christian long before he died and that he was now in heaven. She then explained to me what it means to be a Christian: To believe Christ died to save me from my sin and to put my trust in Him. My five-year-old mind made up, I decided that I did want to be a Christian. With that, my mom prayed for me and I asked Jesus to be my Savior.

Having only been five, I can’t remember all of the details. But had my life really changed? Outwardly, I didn’t change much. I had sinned in the past and I continued sinning even after these events had occurred. As much as I had tried to do what God commanded of me, I failed, time and time again.

As I’ve grown, I have come to realize that there is nothing I can do in my own power to stop sinning. I had already fallen six times. Dare I get up only to fall for the seventh time? But God then showed me that He has forgiven me and will continue to forgive me because He loves me. And He went so far as to sacrifice His Son, Jesus, in my stead to pay sin’s price. And because I have faith in Him, He has been helping me to walk in new life in Christ Jesus.

I want to be baptized today because I want to follow God and to publicly declare my faith in Him.

Friday Frisbee

May 22.  Half my guys went camping, and the other half stayed behind with me.  I took my half to Friday Frisbee, which we do all summer long.  Here are the highlights.

 Thomas makes an awesome block.

 The sequence of photos

These guys and girls go all-out on the Frisbee field!  It sure is fun to watch and photograph.

The Guys Go Camping

May 22.  Fernando, Jacob, and Danny got ready for a campout/canoe trip.  They brought along two of their buddies, Caleb and Dan.

All I had to do was stand around and take pictures!  No packing or organizing the car.  Just having fun with my camera, and waiting for my guys to leave.

See?  Having fun with my camera, and a broken mirror.  (I'm not superstitious in the least.)

 Caleb

Caleb and Dan brought a lot of refreshments, and food.  (It was an overnight trip.  Twenty-four hours.)

 Waiting to leave.

Caleb and Dan say goodbye to their mom.

The guys chat while waiting to leave.

 Everyone is in the car!

 Maybe Danny forgot something?

And one last goof-off look before leaving.

I still had two guys at home (Joseph and Thomas), but it was quieter.  And the going-guys and the staying-guys all had their own fun for the next 24 hours.  :)

Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

I had some balsamic vinegar that I used for I-can't-remember-what, so when it came time to make salad dressing, which happens frequently in my house, I remembered the vinegar and found a recipe.  Here it is!

Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (any kind)
1/2 teaspoon salt
3-4 cranks of the pepper mill (there's nothing like freshly ground pepper!)
1 garlic clove, crushed
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
3/4 cup evoo (extra-virgin olive oil)

You may prepare this recipe by hand; I use a stick blender.

In a mixing bowl, place honey, mustard, salt, pepper, and crushed garlic.  Give it a blend with a few pulses of a stick blender.  Add balsamic vinegar and pulse again.  Add evoo in small batches, pulsing with the stick blender with each addition until emulsified.  If you over-blend the dressing, it will become very thick (not a problem other than for appearance's sake and ease of serving).

Store in a glass jar with a lid.  You may keep this in the refrigerator; mine sits out on the counter and does just fine there.

A note about garlic--I absolutely love the flavor of this dressing with the garlic, which is not overpowering in my opinion.  But if you'd rather have a more subtle garlic flavor, place your garlic clove on a cutting board, and place the flat of a large chef knife on top.  Then give the flat of the knife a good whack with the heel of your hand.  The garlic skin can be easily peeled/picked off, and you can simply plop the crushed garlic into your jar of prepared dressing.  Just be careful not to spoon out the whole clove when you're serving it.

To prepare this dressing by hand, use a whisk.  You'll get a very nice workout!

Drizzle some of this yumminess over a salad and it will become a tasty work of art!

A Mouse, A House, A Garage

Plans4You May 20.  I decided that it would be sooo nice to be able to walk into the garage and straight over to my gardening shelf, which Fernando so thoughtfully provided for me.  The problem had become that since I live with five guys--most of whom lean toward the cluttery side--I had to weave around piles of stuff on the floor, climb over a lawnmower, maneuver around three bicycles, and squeeze through a narrow walkway to get to my stuff.  And the shelf was just ten feet away!!

Fernando was out of town on a business trip, and I figured I could venture out into Man's Land without getting into too much trouble.  Once I started working, I couldn't stop.  I spent six hours almost straight in a row (stopping for water breaks and lunch) cleaning, de-junking, recycling, etc.  Finally, at 3:30pm, and with help from my guys throughout the day, I declared the job done.  Fernando's work area, consisting of our old kitchen cabinets, was still cluttered, and its countertops were littered with "mouse gifts."  Danny had told us there was a mouse about, and we had yet to find it.

Standing there in the evening, admiring all of my handiwork, I figured I'd go through a basket of stuff on that countertop.  Out went old Bass Pro Shops catalogs, and other old paperwork, right to the recycle bin.  What was that box-thing underneath the basket?  Oh, it was an old VCR.  Hmm, maybe we could get rid of it.  Then--yikes!  The inside was filled with stuffing, insulation and other, well, stuffing.  I found the house.

Joseph and Danny came running out to see it, and I called and left a message on Fernando's cell phone:

"Honey, do you think we can throw out that old VCR in your garage work space?  I don't think it'll work any more--"

In the background:  (Joseph)  "Mom, I saw something move in there!"

"Eeeeeeekkkkk!  Omigosh!  Really?  Uh, I gotta go, I think--"

Then I hung up.  Fernando still has this message saved in his voice mail.  :)

The VCR was definitely fit for the trash.  Danny grabbed a board and got the VCR with hidden mouse into a large plastic storage box, where he insisted I take some photos.  Of course.

What we saw in the VCR

Danny shone a flashlight into the opening, and it finally popped out to see what was what.

Cute, huh?  But a rodent nonetheless.  We brought the box and its contents to the back yard patio.  I won't share the grisly details, but...

...the mouse perished in an unexpected flash flood.  After drying out the VCR...

...we got the rest of the junk into black trash bags, and waited eagerly for trash day.  Here's an image looking into our garage.  You can't really tell that we cleaned it out, since there are still bicycles and lots of other stuff in there.  Plus, my parents' boxes and "stuff" still fills most of the right side until their own move-in day, sometime in October.  Here's the shot:

Trash Day.  I'll never forget that day.  Specifically, May 23--Pre-Trash Day.  *sniff*  What a wonderful, glorious day!!  The day before our official Trash Day.  We pulled all the trash out of the garage in the morning, just to clear things out.

Then late afternoon came, when we were legally allowed by village code to place our trash at the curb!  What joy!  What bliss!  Danny even convinced his dad that one old couch in the basement should go out!  Our pile of junk grew, and with it, my joy knew no bounds.

Goodbye forever, clutter!

Can you tell I was happy?  Free of all that stuff.  And best of all, I could walk with a light, sure step to my gardening shelf.  :)
