April's Beginning

April started off cool, with some beautiful days.  I just had to take the photo below; our driveway was getting so crowded!  We have our Suburban and our BMW, Danny has his VW and Jake his Nissan, plus Thomas bought a BMW.  I think that last car there is my parents'.  Either way, it was a fun photo!

Cool spring days means toasty grilled cheese and homemade tomato soup...

It also means Dad coming over and us working on finishing his crossword puzzles together.  These have become my cherished Dad-daughter times, and my treasured memories.

Then it turned warm!  One of the rare times our old BMW was running, I got to drive it to church.  We put the sun roof open, plus our windows--my driving name then becomes Wind in Her Hair.  Yep!

Feels like summer, but welcome to April!!

A Driver's Life for Me

With one huge drive--ten hours--under my belt from the previous week, I felt ready to tackle this next one--a mere seven hours or so.  Should be easier, huh?

We headed east this trip, through Indiana and on to Akron, Ohio.

It had snowed the day before, and the high winds created some dramatic snow effects along the highway.

At our hotel on Thursday night, we settled in for a good night's sleep.  I'm naturally an early riser, which is also a good thing because my body tends to want rest in the afternoon; it's a low cycle in my day when I usually have a cup of tea (iced in the summer) and engage in a low-energy activity.  On this new job, it helps that I can sleep in the afternoon so I'm awake for the nighttime driving.

We were expecting a warm-up over the next few days, even in Akron, but we awoke to this scene out our hotel window:

Snow.  Plus, Fernando keeps the room cold.  I don't think my toes warmed up the entire night.  Since Fernando slept in, I went down to the hotel's breakfast area and served myself some oatmeal.  One of the hotel workers encouraged me to make up a plate for Fernando, and she even gave me a tray for carrying it all up.  Hotels definitely vie for our business, and I think we'll be staying at Fairfield Inn more often.

Back in our room, I read my Bible for a bit, and relaxed until Fernando got up.  I made him happy with the food I brought up for him!  I love being useful, even more than people realize.

Fernando had a quiet time before heading out to the job site.

Then, I was alone.  This is the life of a driver.  It's not glamorous, or exciting.  It's not all spending time with Fernando, watching him do his electronic thing in the back of Arctek Purple (I call her Penelope, by the way--for this vehicle must have a name!).  This life is driving, and riding, snoozing and driving again, eating out as healthy as I can, sleeping in hotel rooms, saying goodbye to Fernando, spending time alone in said hotel rooms, sleeping some more, and driving at night.  It's not easy.  But it is good.

Bed, slept in the night before and my resting spot for the afternoon.

I didn't go to bed right away, so I broke open Volume One of the complete novels of Jane Austen.  It was time to rediscover Pride & Prejudice, at least until sleepy time hit and I could catch some z's.

The seven-hour-plus night drive from Akron, OH to Evansville, IN was tougher than the all-nighter from Tulsa, OK to Muncie, IN.  I was surprised by how tired I was this time around.  But I made it through, never tired enough to have to pull over other than for fuel (diesel, diesel, diesel!!).

Checking in to a hotel at 4:00am is interesting.  I got settled in for the "night," Fernando hung around for a while, then headed out to the job site.  I was alone again, to sleep until my body felt refreshed--which was about four hours.  Instant oatmeal packets come in handy when one misses the hotel breakfast time!  I would be out of my room by noon, to catch a taxi to the job site since Fernando would be working until 4:00 or so, and who wants to hang out in a hotel room for six hours by oneself?  Not I.

The taxi ride was my first solo taxi ride, ever.  It seems funny that it has taken me this long to feel confident in doing new things, in facing insecurities (I adore sameness!), in walking into the unknown.  I've learned that people can be very friendly, if you only ask.  The front desk manager called the taxi company and chatted with me while I waited; the taxi driver was chatty as well--I learned all about his beautiful, spunky daughter who is a nurse and married to a great guy.  He went so far as to drop me off in the back of The Ford Center, right next to the truck!  I tipped him well.

A pause in the action for Fernando to snap my picture.

I am so tickled to be living such new experiences, meeting such interesting people, and seeing life in a completely new way.  God is good.

On the way home, we stopped in tiny Neoga, Illinois for fuel and food (Subway--haven't eaten there in ages and enjoyed every bite!).  When I hopped out of the driver's seat, I noticed a car parked along the side of the store/restaurant, and a kid (really, he was probably in his 20s) really staring at me--you know, leaning forward, squinting his eyes a little.  As Fernando finished pumping gas, I noticed the kid again, obviously staring at me.  I wiggled my fingers hello, figuring I'd try to at least be friendly.

He hollered over at me, "Do you work with TV?"

Simple answers are best.  "Yes!"

"Can you record me?"

"Sorry, I'd need a camera for that!" with a laugh.

"I have a camera!"  Then, "I'm a porn star!!"  Ooookay.

One of the two girls in the car leaned out and echoed, "Yeah, we're porn stars!!"

I just laughed and said goodbye, then headed around the back of the truck to hop in the passenger seat.  Fernando heard the rest of the kid's hollered reply as I walked:

"You look great!  I love you!!!"  He probably thought I was a TV personality...  (Are you kidding me??!!)

The stuff people say.

A Milestone for Thomas

Thomas got his drivers license!!

He studied for and passed the written portion of the licensing process, receiving his permit in mid-May.  This didn't leave a lot of time for us, because Illinois law would change on July 1st, and we really wanted to avoid new hassles for our young driver, and our hectic schedule.  So, we crammed as much driving practice as possible in the next month so that he could pass the road test.

In Illinois, a new law went into effect on July 1.  Basically, anyone between the ages of 18-21 who has not taken a driver's education course would have to take a driver's safety course before being able to obtain his license.  The safety course does not have road time as a component, but somehow the legislators believed that this course (I believe it is one several-hour-long class) will help prevent accidents, especially fatal ones.  I suppose there may be a few young folks out there who will get their permit, practice driving, then get their licenses, without learning anything about safe driving.  I know the law was a consequence of the death of one little girl, hit by the car of a driver (not yet 21) who had never taken driver's ed (which is/was not a requirements for 18+-year-olds).

Anyway, we didn't want the hassle, so Thomas crammed.

Fernando took Thomas out two times a day, trying to get in an hour each time.  He started out right away on the highway, to build confidence and get a good feel of the Suburban.  I'm so very thankful Fernando had the gumption and time to teach Thomas this life-long skill!  After having done it with two drivers, I didn't think I'd be able to do it a third time.

Way to go, Thomas!  You worked really, really hard.  We still consider Thomas a driver-in-training, since he hasn't had tons of hands-on experience.  We'll cut him loose pretty soon, though, since football season is approaching and schedules get hectic.  We're just happy that this milestone was reached and cross so easily!

Tea Talk -- Rejoice and Rejoice!

Welcome to my home for Ruth's Tea Talk!
Sit and share a cup of tea with me as we encourage each other in the Lord.
To participate, click on Ruth's button above.

I'm having...a cup of Trader Joe's Irish breakfast tea in what has become my regular morning mug.

Yep, it's a "Grad" mug!  Danny received it this past June as a high school graduation gift, and he doesn't drink coffee.  Or tea.  It's a pretty hefty sized mug--I guess they figure those college kids really chug down lots of coffee!  It's a great size for a big mug of hot tea in the morning.  So it's my new "regular."

I'm feeling...better, in a few different ways.  Last week I had laryngitis, which is finally gone.  This past week, I had dental work done on Monday morning, and suffered the lovely after-effect of an aching jaw for a few days.  Needless to say, I haven't eaten much lately!

The front porch garden in autumn

On my mind...is new-found time!  A few photos will explain:

Danny got his driver's license!  I'm thrilled for him.  A few hours after he got it, he was driving away to biology class, and I was left behind.  I was slightly anxious but felt amazingly FREE.  :)

I leave you with...a passage of Scripture that my dear sister-in-Christ and I studied over the phone a few days ago.  What a treasured time of in-depth word study we had.

The LORD your God is in your midst,
A victorious warrior.
He will exult over you with joy,
He will be quiet in His love,
He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.
Zephaniah 3:17 NASB

Because it's so amazing, I'll type it straight from the Hebrew (interlinear):

Jehovah your God in your midst (is) mighty.
He will save He will rejoice over you with joy.
He is silent in His love; He rejoices over you with a shout of joy.

The first rejoice (Strong's 7797):  to exult, rejoice.  Translated delight, exult, glad, rejoice, rejoice greatly.

The second rejoice (Strong's 1524):  a rejoicing.  Translated exultation, greatly, joy, rejoicing.  From #1524--to rejoice, translated cry, exult, glad, rejoice.

From the dictionary:

  • exult:  to show or feel a lively or triumphant joy; rejoice exceedingly; be highly elated or jubilant.  To leap, especially for joy.
  • delight:  to have great pleasure; take pleasure.
  • rejoice:  to be glad, take delight.  To make joyful; gladden.

Sorry that's so long!  If you skipped over it, that's fine, too.  The Bible verse is complete in itself!  But the in-depth word study is amazing, since we're not the ones who are doing this action.  God is.

The Lord is exulting over me.  With joy.  He is showing a lively and triumphant joy over me.  He is rejoicing exceedingly over me.  He is highly elated and jubilant, even to the point of leaping, over me.  He is taking great pleasure, gladness, and delight, in me.  Me.  This lowly sinner, a teeny-tiny one of over four billion people, not accomplishing great things for Him, not one of astounding faith.  But the Lord acts this way over me, His child.  I am simply amazed.
